Guacamole is one of those snacks that never goes out of style.

There’s something about the creamy texture, the zing from fresh lime, and the hint of spice from the jalapeno that makes it irresistible.

It is perfect for a cozy night with tortilla chips, as a party appetizer, or as a tasty topping for tacos.

The best part? It is super easy to make, and you get to control every delicious detail.

In today’s post, I’m going to show you how to make guacamole that’s so fresh and flavorful you’ll never want to get store-bought again.

Ready? Let’s dive into this recipe!

What You Need to Make Guacamole

  • 3 ripe avocados (Mexican Hass are the best for creamy guacamole)
  • 2 Roma tomatoes
  • 1 jalapeno
  • 1 lime (freshly squeezed)
  • ½ red onion
  • 2 tbsp cilantro, chopped
  • ¼ tsp salt, or to taste
  • ¼ tsp black pepper, or to taste
Counter top full of veggies: 3 avocados, 2 tomatoes, 1 onion, 1 jalapeño, 1 lime, and cilantro next to a dish with salt and pepper

How to Make Guacamole

Step 1: Dice and Prepare the Vegetables

Start by dicing up the veggies.

Start with the tomatoes. Just chop them into small pieces and set them aside.

Do the same with the red onion and jalapeno. If you want to control the heat, remove the seeds from the jalapeno (unless you’re a fan of extra spice!).

Finally, chop up the fresh cilantro, and you’re all set with your veggies.

Step 2: Prepare the Avocados

Cut them in half, remove the pit, and scoop out the green goodness into a bowl.

Use a fork to mash the avocados to your desired consistency. I like mine a little chunky, but feel free to mash it smooth if you prefer.

Step 3: Combine and Mix the Ingredients

Here comes the fun part!

Add the diced tomatoes, red onion, and chopped jalapeno to your mashed avocado.

Squeeze the juice of the lime into the bowl, and add your chopped cilantro.

Sprinkle in the salt and black pepper, then mix everything together until it’s well combined.

Taste it, and feel free to adjust the seasoning. You might want a little more salt or lime juice, depending on your preference.

Step 4: Serve Your Guacamole

Once your guacamole is perfectly mixed, it’s time to serve!

Grab some tortilla chips and dig in, or use it as a topping for tacos, burritos, or even grilled chicken.

I like to garnish mine with a few extra sprigs of cilantro or a lime wedge on the side for a fresh, vibrant look.

Tips for the Best Homemade Guacamole

Making guacamole dip is easy, but there are a few things you can do to make it even better:

  • Choose ripe avocados: If your avocados are too hard, they’ll be tough to mash. If they’re too ripe, the texture might get too mushy. Look for avocados that give a little when you press them but aren’t squishy.
  • Fresh ingredients are key: Don’t skimp on the freshness of your cilantro, lime, and jalapeno. The flavor really shines when everything is fresh.
  • Season to taste: Guacamole is all about balancing flavors. Adjust the salt, lime juice, and spice level to suit your tastes.

How to Store Leftover Guacamole

If you happen to have any guacamole left over (which, let’s be real, is rare!), you’ll want to store it properly to keep it fresh.

The best way to prevent your homemade guacamole from turning brown is to press plastic wrap directly onto the surface of the guacamole to limit air exposure.

Store it in an airtight container in the fridge, and try to eat it within a day or two for the best taste.

Variations of Guacamole

Once you get the hang of this classic guacamole recipe, you can get creative with different flavors and textures. Here are a few fun ideas:

  • Add-ins for extra flavor: Try mixing in diced mango, pomegranate seeds, or even roasted garlic for a twist on traditional guacamole.
  • Spicy guacamole: Love heat? Add more jalapeno or throw in a splash of hot sauce to kick it up a notch.
  • Creamy guacamole: Add a spoonful of sour cream or Greek yogurt for a richer, smoother texture.

Absolutely! However, guacamole is best enjoyed fresh. If you need to make it ahead of time, store it in an airtight container and press plastic wrap directly onto the surface to reduce browning.

How do I make my guacamole less spicy?

If you’re looking for a milder guacamole, simply remove the seeds from the jalapeno before adding it to your mix. You can also add less jalapeno to control the heat.
