Cake pops are cute, fun, and super easy to make.

They are little balls of cake mixed with frosting, stuck on a lollipop stick, and dipped in chocolate. Think of them as a mix between a cake and a lollipop. Soft on the inside, crunchy on the outside, and totally delicious.

Plus, they’re the perfect way to use up leftover cake (Though you can bake a whole cake for this, just like I did!).

They’re great for any occasion, like Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, a birthday party, or just because you have a sweet tooth.

And they make for a fun and easy baking project to share with kids. No fancy baking skills needed!

This easy cake pop recipe will walk you through every step.

So grab your ingredients, and let’s make some delicious DIY cake pops!

Ingredients

Marble table with bowls of cake mix, frosting and sprinkles, next to chocolate bars, red food coloring, and lollipop sticks
  • 1 cake mix of your favorite flavor (about 3-4 cups crumbled)
  • 1 tub (15.6 oz) of Betty Crocker frosting (any flavor)
  • 20 lollipop sticks
  • 12 oz white chocolate chips (or melting white chocolate)
  • Pink or red food coloring
  • Heart-shaped chocolates for decoration
  • Icing for decoration
  • 2 tbsp sprinkles for decoration

Step-by-Step Cake Pop Recipe (Easy DIY Guide)

  1. If you haven’t baked your cake yet, go ahead and do that now! Use any cake mix or homemade recipe you like. Once baked, let it cool completely. This step is important, warm cake won’t work for cake pops!
Baked cake
  1. Crumble the cake into a large bowl using your hands or a fork. The finer the crumbs, the better.

  1. Then, add the tub of frosting and mix everything together until it forms a dough-like texture.
Mixing frosting into the crumbles
  1. Roll the mixture into small balls, about 1-inch in size. If you want to get creative, shape some into hearts! Place them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper and refrigerate for 30 minutes.
  1. Melt a small amount of white chocolate (about 1 oz). Dip the end of each lollipop stick into the melted chocolate, then insert it into the center of each cake ball. This helps secure the stick in place. Refrigerate for another 60 minutes.

  1. Melt the remaining white chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl, heating in 30-second intervals and stirring in between. If you want pink cake pops, divide the melted chocolate into two bowls and add pink or red food coloring to one.
Melting the chocolate
  1. Dip each cake pop into the melted chocolate, coating it completely. Let the excess drip off before placing it back on the baking sheet.

How to Store and Serve Cake Pops

  • Serving: Cake pops are best served at room temperature.
  • Storing: Keep them in an airtight container in the fridge for up to a week.
  • Freezing: Freeze cake pops (without decorations) for up to a month.

Tips For The Best Cake Pops

  • To prevent cake pops from cracking, let them sit at room temperature for a few minutes before dipping. Cracks happen when the cake pops are too cold and the chocolate is too hot.
  • To avoid cake pops from falling off the stick, make sure to dip the stick in melted chocolate before inserting it into the cake ball. This helps secure it in place.
  • You can use homemade frosting instead of store-bought. Buttercream or cream cheese frosting works great.
